About Rocks & Radishes

In 2014, I joined friends at MLB spring training camp in Phoenix, AZ. Over some drinks and a beautiful spring afternoon, I asked a friend who was in charge of the fields what they were going to do with all the banners hanging on the outfield fence. He said, "the same thing they do every year, cut them down and throw them away." I said, "can I have them?" He said, "what are you going to do with them?" I said, I'm not sure yet but I hate to see them go to the landfill. So I came home with 50 banners. And I threw them in a storage shed, not sure what to do with them yet. Then one night, I woke up and I got a notion. My mom had bought me a sewing machine that was still in the box. I thought I could make bags...like for Farmers' Market, the grocery store or the beach!. So I hired someone to teach me how to sew. I youtubed how to make a bobbin. And I made a pattern out of a Trader Joe's paper bag. And the rocks&radishes bag was born. The name came from my first sewing lesson. When my teacher arrived, I had a table set up outside on my patio overlooking Laguna canyon holding down my pattern with rocks from my garden. Next to the table, was a flower box with radish sprouts growing. My teacher said, "it's natural, you should call your business rocks&radishes." And my vision was founded in this very organic way. Take things on their way to the landfill, and recreate them into very useful products that prolong their life and benefit our environment.

I don't think outside the box,
I think about what I can do with the box!
